“Made by God, and yet we think of ourselves and others as if we were junk… Creator who crafted us, forgive us for seeing useless junk where You created beautiful beings.”– From Our Prayer of Confession on Sunday, January 10, 2021
Have you ever felt like you were, well, junk? As if your life counted for nothing and that all you have done and have yet to do is as worthless as a banana peel or used coffee filter, or as useless as square wheels on a car, or worse? Have you ever felt that way about other people – that they have nothing at all of value to bring to or add to this life and world? To be honest, if you have, you are not alone – not alone at all. To feel this way about oneself and or other human beings is human nature, that is to say that it is a feeling felt by nearly all of humankind at some point in our lives.
Does God believe that you or any other human are junk? Absolutely not. You and all fellow mankind are created for a divine purpose. Regardless of how you feel about yourself or others right now, nothing changes that fact – and nothing ever has nor ever will.
God does not create worthless human junk.
You are marvelously created to live up to the full potential that our loving God has created you with. You can do it! Keep in mind the words of the Psalmist who wrote:
“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.” – Psalm 139:14 (NRSV)
You are completely worthy of healthy self-love, self-worth, and self-dignity, and the work that God created you to do on this earth. Others are worthy of you seeing them in those healthy ways, as well; these ways are the opposite of seeing oneself and others as junk. Every human has divine things to do in this world, regardless of age, financial status, or anything else!
May we all remember our true amazing worth when we have our moments of self-doubt and of doubting others’ worth and usefulness. Doing so helps us make it through such times, keeps us humble, and keeps us walking in The Light of Love. You are worthy!
